About Andrew J. Polsky
Andrew J. Polsky is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Hunter College of the City University 0f New York (CUNY). After earning his Ph.D. in Politics at Princeton University, he joined the Hunter College Department of Political Science in Fall 1984 and remained a member of the department until he retired in January 2026. He taught courses in American politics, including the large introductory course and courses on political parties and the American presidency. He was also a longtime member of the doctoral faculty in the political science program at the CUNY Graduate Center. From 2005 to 2010, Professor Polsky was the editor of Polity, a leading political science journal.
In 2013, he was appointed as the Ruth & Harold Newman Dean of the Hunter College School of Arts & Sciences, Hunter’s largest school with more than 17,000 students and 450+ full-time faculty. He continued as dean until summer 2024, the school’s longest serving dean.
Andrew J. Polsky is the author of two books, The Rise of the Therapeutic State (Princeton University Press, 1991) and Elusive Victories: The American Presidency at War (Oxford University Press, 2012). Elusive Victories was a main selection of the History Book Club and the Military Book Club. He is also the editor of The Eisenhower Presidency: Lessons for the Twenty- First Century (Rowman & Littlefield/Lexington Books, 2015).
In addition to his books, Professor Polsky has published numerous scholarly articles in such journals as Political Science Quarterly, American Politics Research, Presidential Studies Quarterly, Polity, Perspectives on Politics, the Journal of Theoretical Politics, and Studies in American Political Development. His article, “Partisan Regimes in American Politics,” was awarded the 2013 Polity prize.
